Wonder Mentor Program Camp 2017
Sierra’s Wonder Mentoring Program is one of the few mentoring programs designed around children in foster care. We know that one consistent, caring person can change the course of a child’s life. Our vision is that no child goes through foster care alone. A mentor can make all the difference in the world to a child who has no permanent family.
Every summer, our Wonder Foster Kids (Explorers) and their Mentors (Guides), spend a long weekend in the Sierras, doing things they have never done before. Do you remember the first time you sat around a campfire and told stories or slept with other kids and talked with the lights out? Those are the special memories that we take with us through life. Camp Wonder gives our foster kids the time to build these memories that they can fall back on during the year when things may not be going well.
At Sierra Forever Families we pair a mentor with a foster child for a year’s journey together, culminating in our Camp Wonder. For most of our kids and mentors, the bond established in that first year carries over and many stay together year after year. As one mentor wrote about this past Camp Wonder, “My Explorer and I have been matched for 9 years. This was our 6th year at Camp Wonder. At the camp fire, he told me he had something for me and pulled out a pink cord bracelet he made for me during free time. I was touched. It has been so fun to watch him grow up and become such a thoughtful young man.”
Some of our older Explorers come back as Leaders in Training. They are strong role models for our younger Explorers. As one Leader in Training wrote, “A special camp moment for me was having many young explorers look up to me and me setting an example for them.”
All the kids and their mentors wrote about the memories they created together and can’t wait to return next summer. You can help support the Wonder Explorers dreams by signing up for an orientation to learn more about being a Guide and by donating to Sierra’s Wonder program. Go to SierraFF.org.
